Description: As a study aid, this is an adequate general overview of psychiatry that does not go too deeply into subspecialties aside from child and adolescent psychiatry. It is structured in a series of multiple choice questions, formatted mostly in vignettes. Answers are provided with a short paragraph of explanation. The previous edition was published in 2011.
Purpose: The purpose is to help medical students studying for their psychiatry clerkship examination or USMLE step 2 CK examination. The book covers all major diagnoses with an emphasis on differential diagnoses and treatments. The format resembles what students would see on a standardized examination. These objectives are worthy and the book help prepare learners to integrate learned knowledge into a testable skill. The book does a good job meeting its stated objectives.
Audience: This book is intended for medical students, largely those preparing for psychiatry clerkship or USMLE step 2 CK examinations.
Features: This is a good general overview of the major diagnoses of psychiatry and this edition has been updated to reflect the DSM 5. It is well written and organized by specialty and provides practice tests with all of the material integrated together. This more closely simulates standardized exams. The book does well presenting information on a broader level in order to be most practical for beginning learners. It provides clinical practical clinical vignettes and sufficiently explains the rationale for the answer choices.
Assessment: This update was needed to reflect the DSM 5. The book is practical and is a great supplemental resource for learners. It can be used as an assessment method to test knowledge, as well as a teaching tool with the explanations provided.
