Description: This book includes 34 chapters that address either the relationship between intelligence and personality or their joint contribution to the prediction and understanding of some very diverse phenomena (e.g., creativity, literacy, criminal behavior, military performance, exceptional children, and hypoglycemia in diabetics). Different chapters emphasize empirical findings, theoretical, or measurement issues.
Purpose: The purpose is "to summarize current findings and examine potential areas of the personality-intelligence interface." These two areas of psychological research are usually treated separately. The effort to discern empirical and theoretical linkages is a worthy one. The objective of the authors has been successfully met.
Audience: The book appears to be written primarily for researchers in the fields of personality, intelligence, and educational psychology, although psychologists working in applied settings (ranging from schools, the military, correctional settings, industry, and sports) will find chapters to interest them. The contributors represent four continents and include some of the leading authorities in the world .
Features: Many of the chapters provide tables and figures that support and elaborate on the text. All of the chapters are heavily referenced, with very occasional citations from 1994 and 1995. The index is primarily a subject index; no author index is provided.
Assessment: This is a useful reference work with largely well-written, albeit technical, chapters that attempt to integrate theory and research from two distinct domains of psychology. It is likely to stand alone as the definitive work in this area for quite some time.
