Description: This book, part of a 3-volume set dealing with cardiac pacemakers and implantable defibrillators, is a collection of 32 case studies involving implantable defibrillators.
Purpose: The case problems are separated into easy, moderate, and complex sections.
Audience: The workbook is applicable to individuals with widely different levels of expertise in this subject.
Features: The case studies consist of actual problems encountered with these devices. Each contains an electrocardiogram or numerical defibrillator readout followed by one or more questions. The questions are straightforward, asking the reader to simply interpret the strip or diagnose the malfunction. On the following page the illustrations are repeated with appropriate highlights diagramming the strip. Together with the text, they provide a precise explanation to the case problem. The answers are concise, well written, and easy to follow. The lessons become progressively more difficult throughout the volume. The problems in the complex section are sufficiently difficult to challenge the practicing electrophysiologist. However, a student in the field who completes the easier sections should also be able to tackle these.
Assessment: This volume thoroughly covers the potential problems with implantable defibrillators with provocative problems combined with clear solutions.
