Description: This is a revised and updated fourth edition of a book that combines histology with cell biology and pathology information. This approach is uniquely tailored to educating medical students in an integrated curriculum where the learning of normal histology and pathological conditions can reinforce each other. The third edition was published in 2012.
Purpose: By presenting histology with cell biology and pathology components, the authors intend to better prepare medical students for learning pathophysiology and clinical medicine.
Audience: Although this book is intended mainly for medical students, students in other healthcare professions as well as pathology students, residents, clinicians, and teaching faculty should find it highly informative.
Features: Basic tissue types are presented in the first part. To underscore the importance of molecular biology in understanding the function of tissues and organs, a separate chapter is devoted to cell signaling. The remaining five parts present information about organ systems grouped by their function. Clinical and pathological conditions are extensively presented throughout. Color graphics, photographs, and tables illustrate facilitate learning. An essential concepts section at the end of each chapter summarizes key points. Histology concept mapping is provided, along with an audiovisual version on an accompanying website where the text can be searched or the images downloaded.
Assessment: Although this edition continues with the same layout and format, the content has been updated and pathology aspects have been expanded. This is a one-of-a kind book that offers a more advanced approach to learning histology within the context of cell biology and pathology.
