This text consists of 20 chapters divided into three main sections. The sole author is an international authority on infectious diseases of cultured fishes. Each chapter is superbly referenced. The index is adequate. This book was originally published as Health Maintenance of Cultured Fishes: Principal Microbial Diseases (CRC Press, 1994). It is intended to provide an overview of health maintenance theory and practice in freshwater and marine fishes cultured for food, bait, or restocking, with detail given to major viral and bacterial diseases. Ornamental fishes, except goldfish, are not covered in any detail. This book was written for students and scientists involved in modern aquaculture of food and sport fishes. Fishery managers, biologists, pathologists, and aquatic veterinarians also will benefit from this book. The introductory section on health maintenance covers a broad range of topics that are important in keeping fish healthy in confinement rearing situations. Sections on epizootiology, pathology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention (including immunization) are written for the non-DVW. The sections on viruses and bacteria are divided into species-specific chapters covering, among others, catfish, carp, eels, trout and salmon, striped bass, and tilapia. The section on therapeutics is rather limited because of government regulations and the nature of the industry. This is an excellent source of information on bacterial and viral diseases of major fish groups currently being farmed. It is current and designed to assist a wide audience with varying medical training and experience. My only wish for a more valuable text would be to have color plates of thegross lesions.
