Overview

There currently is a clear tendency to an increasing number of accidental injuries in elderly people, in sport injuries and car crashes also in countries which recently joined the European Union and candidates to join the European Union. Patients expect very good functional results even after serious injuries. But in contrast to this development, Trauma Surgery as an independent field, is not yet established in all European countries. Therefore, it seems mandatory to compile a book that covers the state-of-the-art in Trauma Surgery. The book also serves to harmonise the practice of Trauma Surgery within the European Union, and to prepare for the exam of the U.E.M.S.

Description: This is the first of three volumes in the European Manual of Medicine series intended to provide up-to-date information on trauma for both clinicians in training and senior practitioners. The European Manual of Medicine is developed from data gathered by the Union of European Medical Societies.
Purpose: A review with consensus recommendations for management of injuries in the torso, head, and vascular bed is provided.
Audience: General and trauma surgeons needing an outline of the general approach to surgical trauma care or preparing for standardized examinations are an appropriate audience for this work drawn from North American and European specialists.
Features: Over half of the book is devoted to traumatic brain injury and craniofacial trauma. The second half covers trauma to the chest, specific abdominal organs, and vascular system. Additional chapters describe the approach to laparotomy in trauma, the role of laparoscopy, management of abdominal compartment syndrome, and abdominal wall complications of injury. Many of the chapters use tables and include excellent color line drawings and photographs which reproduce with good to excellent detail. Each chapter contains a reference list with primary sources dating to within two to three years of publication. The table of contents lists chapters by content and authorship, while a concluding subject index provides adequate access to content.
Assessment: This book is a good reflection of contemporary care which may be used by practicing surgeons. A concern is the excessive detail, including basic science considerations, in the discussion of management of brain injury. This same degree of detail is not reflected in discussion of other problems. While the editors indicate that European consensus recommendations are provided, they are not uniformly presented or included in all chapters.
