Description: One of 12 titles in the Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology series, this book focuses on head and neck pathology, encompassing non-neoplastic, benign, and malignant neoplasms, as well as some endocrine pathology such as thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, and paraganglia system. The first edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to present information in a structured format that gives pathologists the ability to reach the correct diagnosis in selected disorders of the larynx, sinonasal tract, ear and temporal bone, salivary gland, oral, gnathic, and neck regions. In general, this book is similar to others in the subspecialty of surgical pathology, but it distinguishes itself with the excellent organization of the vast amount of information and the high-quality illustrations and photomicrographs.
Audience: Although intended for busy surgical pathologists, this book is also appropriate for residents in pathology and medical students who are inclined towards pathology. The editor, Dr. Lester Thompson, is a renowned head and neck and endocrine pathologist, formerly of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). His vast experience in this field makes him possibly THE authority on head and neck and endocrine pathology.
Features: This is an in-depth, well-organized book. Its best features include synoptic tables in each chapter for pathological features, which include gross and microscopic findings, ancillary studies, and differential diagnoses, and disease fact sheets which include incidence, locations, morbidity and mortality, gender/age distribution, clinical features, radiographic findings, and prognosis/treatment. The color art includes clinical photographs, radiographs, gross photographs, and photomicrographs, all of which are of the highest quality and contribute greatly to the usefulness of the book.
Assessment: This book stands out from others in this field because of its organization, useful tables, and high-quality color art. This updated edition is justified by the increase in general knowledge of pathological entities and the increasing complexity of the surgical pathology workload.
