Description: Handbook of Clinical Treatment of Infidelity "is a collection of articles that have been co-published in the Journal of Couple and Relationship Theory, Volume 4, Numbers 2/3 2005."
Purpose: This text is for clinicians working with couples who wish to save their marriages after an affair. The purpose is to offer fresh approaches to this clinical situation of helping marriages heal.
Audience: This book is written for clinicians who do marriage/relationship therapy. The editors have many publications to their credit. Most of the contributors are teaching clinicians.
Features: The book offers 15 scholarly articles on infidelity including several on the relatively new phenomenon of internet infidelity. Given this format, there is a lot of repetition of general definitions. There are also articles coming from many different orientations, (e.g., self-psychology, emotionally focused therapy, attachment theory) which make it less cohesive as a text. The clinician seeking a casebook on this type of therapy may be disappointed. Some chapters do include specific examples while others are research-oriented and plainly theoretical.
Assessment: The clinician who is interested in surveying how different theories view infidelity will enjoy this eclectic collection. It is not, however, a cohesive book of strategy and techniques. Less scholarly titles such as "After the Affair" by Janis A. Spring, and "NOT just friends" by Shirley Glass and works by Gottman may provide more practical guidance for clinicians.
