Description: This book examines the current state of graduate medical education by reviewing its history, reporting on its many challenging issues, and suggesting approaches for moving forward. It provides an all-encompassing view of the issues and options in graduate medical education.
Purpose: The purpose is to address the major challenges to contemporary graduate medical education such as credentialing, teaching and learning, performance assessment, professionalism, technological innovation, research training, the supply and distribution of physicians, and financial concerns and funding. The author does an outstanding job of describing the issues and relating possible options for addressing these issues.
Audience: The target audience is anyone associated with graduate medical education — faculty, directors, administrators, state and federal government agencies, and residents themselves. The author has outstanding credentials for addressing these issues, with four decades of experience working in multiple positions related to graduate medical education at both the institutional and the national level.
Features: The chapters on the history of GME, credentialing, funding, and manpower are primarily informational. The remaining chapters are largely the product of the author's personal experience and that of his colleagues. Each chapter addresses one topic by laying a foundation for understanding, the issues related to the topic, and recommendations for overcoming the issues. The writing is clear and appropriate for the targeted audience. The many examples offer real-time connections to news events and published articles. While the offered options do not provide exact steps for overcoming the issues, they do provide an adequate level of thought and guidance as to what paths should be taken to tackle each issue.
