Description: This is a thorough yet concise and easy to understand review of pediatric cardiology that encompasses all relevant material from the physical exam and innocent murmurs to complex congenital heart disease (CHD).
Purpose: The intention was to provide a concise, uncomplicated overview of pediatric cardiology without excessive and unnecessary detail, which was well done by the author.
Audience: The book is intended for family practitioners, internists, and trainees in both pediatric and adult cardiology. The author is a superbly qualified and well known pediatric cardiologist.
Features: At the outset, the book briefly covers cardiovascular physiology, physical exam, and basic diagnostic studies as they relate to the subject of pediatric cardiology. Appropriately, this is followed by chapters that focus upon simple congenital lesions with progression to more complex CHD in the latter portion of the text. The majority of the book is devoted to diagnosis and management of CHD and the author does an excellent job of concisely reviewing what can be very intimidating material in an organized and straightforward manner. Excellent figures and diagrams that accompany the text further enhance readers' ability to comprehend the difficult material.
Assessment: This concise and easy to read book accomplishes everything required of an introductory textbook in the field of pediatric cardiology. It would be an excellent addition to the library of any physician taking care of children or patients with congenital heart disease, or anyone with an interest in the field of pediatric cardiology.
