Description: This is the second edition of a technical introduction to various imaging modalities with well-illustrated line drawings, clinical images, and photographs, more than 300 of which are in color.
Purpose: It is intended to explain the scientific principles of each modality, from fundamental principles to clinical application. The book is designed well and is quite appropriate for the intended audience.
Audience: The author states that the primary audiences for this book are graduate and undergraduate students with a background in physics, mathematics, or engineering. It is also intended for biomedical engineers and medical professionals. In addition, it would be a good introductory book for medical physics students.
Features: The eight chapters can be grouped into two parts. One part includes chapters 1, 7, and 8, with chapter 1 providing the introduction to digital image processing and chapters 7 and 8 covering image analysis and visualization. The second part makes up the bulk of the book with chapters detailing various imaging modalities including radiography (fluoroscopy is also included in this chapter), computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine imaging, and ultrasound imaging. Each chapter in this part includes a brief history of the imaging modality, theory on the physics of the signal and how it leads to image formation (students with engineering backgrounds will find this helpful in their pursuit of understanding image formation), equipment in use, a brief description of biological effects and safety issues (beneficial for introductory medical physics students), and a discussion of future expectations. The book also has a discussion of the theory of linear systems in the appendix, as well as questions on each chapter, a short bibliography, and a detailed index.
Assessment: This book is written well and is easy to read. Depending on the reader's background, one can easily skip sections on mathematical theories on image formation (especially first-year medical physics students) but still get an understanding of various imaging modalities. Students interested in pursuing medical imaging will find this book helpful and should consider adding it to their private collection. One of the features I like about this second edition is the set of questions on each chapter at the end of the book intended to test readers' knowledge. Anyone teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in medical imaging will greatly benefit from the material in this book.
