Audience: According to the editor, this book "is not a 'how-to-do-it' evidence-based medicine manual." Indeed, this broad and insightful introduction to the concept of EBM in the field of endocrinology may be of interest to a diverse audience, including students, residents, fellows, and their teachers; practicing clinicians; academic researchers; public health workers, and others. The editor and the authors of the various chapters represent some of the leading authorities in the field of EBM, who have managed to provide their readers with an informative and enjoyable introduction to this broad topic.
Features: The first three of the book's four parts cover the history and philosophy of EBM, the practical aspects of implementing and supporting the EBM approach in the practice of endocrinology, and the generation and use of research evidence. Most of the chapters are well written, concise, and to the point, and are supported by helpful charts and tables. I found the discussion of cost-effectiveness analyses to be too technical for the reader without a proper background in this area. The last part of the book provides a series of unique illustrations of the practical use and limitations of EBM in everyday endocrine practice using a case-based approach.
Assessment: The book provides a broad introduction to the use and limitations of EBM in the field of clinical endocrinology. The format, consisting of essays, review articles, and illustrative case studies, will provide readers with a useful perspective of the current applications of clinical research in endocrinology as a basis for medical decision making.
