About the Author

John B. Zabriskie (MD, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons) is Professor Emeritus and former head of the Laboratory of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology at the Rockefeller University, New York. Dr Zabriskie is a senior scientist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He has written numerous articles on immunology, microbiology, and neurology.

Description: This is a relatively brief summary of those diseases with a major immunological component. The book begins with a brief description of the normal immune system and then focuses on immunological aspects of various pathological states.
Purpose: This is meant to be an introduction to clinical immunology and it succeeds in this goal. There are surely some individuals who do not need a detailed discussion of the many immunological diseases. On the other hand, there are not many more details than one would find in a thorough, basic immunology textbook.
Audience: It is written as an introduction for practitioners and residents. It is not targeted for a particular specialty and seems to be most appropriate for family physicians. The editor is a highly regarded expert in the field and he has assembled a group of authorities to write the chapters.
Features: The book consists of overviews of diseases in which the immune system has been significantly compromised in some way. Each chapter is to the point and informative, but nonetheless, does not provide much detail. Reading lists at the end of each chapter vary in the number of references. In some cases, review articles have been separated from research publications but that is not true for all. The art work is well done. Unfortunately, the figures and tables do not seem to be available for downloading.
Assessment: While this is a well written and up-to-date book describing diseases that involve the immune system, it does not provide much depth. It's good for a quick overview of major diseases and syndromes, but relatively few details are given. That's a good starting point but may not be sufficient for many potential users. On the other hand, description without excessive detail may suit some practitioners very well.
