There have been significant advances in research involving the isolation and culture of epithelial cells in the past decade, and many new techniques have been developed. Monolayer cultures can be used to evaluate the nature and behavior of cells, while the use of epithelial cells in model systems has allowed a deeper understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms and interactions. The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to many techniques for epithelial cell culture, combining in one volume the more commonly used prools along with many that are more speci- ized. Epithelial Cell Culture Prools should help those who are new to this field and want to learn the basic culture techniques, as well as those needing to use more wide ranging and specific prools. It should be a useful resource on its own, and also complement the other volumes that have been written about cell culture in the Methods in Molecular Biology series. Epithelial Cell Culture Prools covers a wide variety of prools, mostly aimed at the researcher, but also a few aimed at clinicians. The est- lishment and maintenance of primary cultures derived from many different tissues and different species is covered. Particular emphasis has been placed on prools needed to further analyze and assess epithelial cells, for example, by looking at apoptosis and integrins and by measuring membrane capa- tance and confluence. Using different co-culture techniques, it is possible also to develop models to investigate many different systems in vitro.

Description: This book on epithelial cell culture protocols is Volume 188 in the series Methods in Molecular Biology.
Purpose: The editor states that this volume is intended to provide up-to-date information on placing epithelial cells in primary culture as well as establishing epithelia cell lines. These are worthwhile goals and are largely met.
Audience: The book could be used effectively by experienced or novice basic science researchers or clinicians since the protocols are written clearly and concisely. There are 31 brief chapters in this book and about 60 authors. They are experienced and knowledgeable researchers in the field.
Features: Among the many experimental protocols described in this book are methods for isolating, culturing, and establishing epithelial cell cultures from a variety of mammalian organs. The protocols are written clearly and should serve as a useful laboratory resource for anyone wishing to learn how to culture these cells. It might have been helpful to group all the protocols for culturing cells for the same organ; e.g., there are three chapters on culturing different cells from the lung (Chapters 2, 7, and 11). A similar point could be made regarding liver and skin cell protocols.
Assessment: This book is intended and written as a laboratory guide manual. It would be quite useful for anyone wishing to place epithelial cells in culture.
