Description: This wonderful monograph addresses the explosion of technological changes and the challenges they bring to the fields of medicine and surgery. It combines contributions from U.S. and international leaders in academics, practice, and government to cogently address the effects of technological change on the surgical process.
Purpose: Not since the introduction of ether and antisepsis has surgical practice changed so rapidly. Many of these changes are due to technological changes in patient diagnosis, surgical technique, and processing of information. This book clearly addresses these issues and helps guide readers through these turbulent and exciting times.
Audience: It is addressed to practitioners, although physicians in training and administrators might find the book useful. The authors are all recognized leaders in the fields of surgery and have dedicated themselves to the development, implementation, and dissemination of novel techniques.
Features: The book is nicely divided into seven sections. The first addresses the process of change, and will be an enduring contribution to the field. The second section addresses dissemination, education, and implementation of change and technology. The remaining sections are descriptions of novel techniques addressing current clinical challenges. It is unclear how long these sections will be relevant, and the chapter on transluminal surgery is already dated. The many color plates and clear illustrations complement the text.
Assessment: Many books about the technology and the future become outdated and even farcical in a short amount of time. Think about Cold War era predictions about colonizing the moon and mining on Mars at the turn of the millennium, or predictions of early computer experts that computers would be limited to government and a few large companies. The authors of this book combine future predictions with discussions about the process of change and education to make a powerful and enduring contribution to the field.
