Each case begins with a detailed, tabulated, EMG study, followed by several questions, and a detailed analysis of the study, then takes into account patient history, the physical examination, EMG readings, treatment, and patient follow-up to sharpen the clinicians problem-solving skills.

About the Author

Bashar Katirji, MD, FACP has mentored more than 50 fellows in Neuromuscular Disorders & Electromyography, contributed to more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and numerous scientific presentations, and published several leading textbooks. In addition to being actively involved in clinical research, he has a wide and informative personal experience in the use of electrodiagnostic studies for the diagnosis of peripheral nerve and muscle disorders. This experience spans over 35 years.

Description: This is the third edition of a book that teaches electromyography using the author's personal case studies. This provides a clinical approach that makes application and discussion of real-life neuromuscular cases more cogent. Compared to the 2007 second edition, there are newly restructured and updated cases and new chapters that focus more on the basic concepts and principles of EMG.
Purpose: The purpose is to present real-life neuromuscular cases and cull teaching objectives that can be clinically applicable. This is a worthwhile objective, as it translates well from the book to the clinical setting. The book does a good job meeting the objectives in the way each case is laid out with a history and physical, questions to consider, electrodiagnostic findings and interpretation, followed by discussion.
Audience: The intended audience is medical practitioners in the field of neuromuscular and the book is especially helpful for residents and fellows. This book is good for both beginners and those at the intermediate level of training. The author is the fellowship director and clinical instructor of EMG at the Cleveland Medical Center.
Features: The first of the book's two parts covers the basic concepts and principles of EMG. The second part presents cases divided by localization. The introduction of basic concepts is a welcome addition to help beginners to EMG. The organization and layout of the cases is conducive to facilitating a thought exercise as one works through the case. The diagrams, charts, and interpretation of the EMG studies are simplified in a way that makes it easy to understand while also echoing what would normally be discussed in a clinical context. With only 27 cases, the reusability of the book is somewhat limited.
Assessment: As an upcoming neuromuscular fellow, I found this book helpful in laying out the basic foundation of electrodiagnostic principles. The cases cover a wide breadth of diagnoses and present a challenging view of differentials. The book is unique in that it provides real-life clinical cases and outlines how an expert approaches them. This new edition is welcomed in that the new format of the cases is more extensive.

This is a collection of 25 studies in the field of electromyography. The purpose is to teach principles of interpretation of electromyographic data using a case study approach. This book is aimed at residents in neurology and psychiatry who are mastering the electromyographic examination. This book features eight studies involving cases of the lower extremities such as femoral neuropathy, and eight cases involving the upper extremity such as brachial neuritis, and eight cases of the upper and lower extremity such as myasthenia gravis. A brief history of each case is included, as well as a physical examination, a series of introductory questions, a presentation of EMG and NCV findings, an interpretation of findings, and a detailed discussion with illustration and references. This is an excellent supplementary book for residents doing an EMG rotation or reviewing for board examinations. A basic understanding of EMG fundamentals is assumed. Instruction on performing an EMG is not provided, only its interpretation. Residents will find this book both relevant and challenging. It provokes them to apply their skill to the interpretation of commonplace cases.
