Overview

CT signs of early cerebral infarction are subtle within the first 6 hours after symptom onset, but important to recognize. The CT reading panel of ECASS wants to share its experience by publishing this series of early CT scans from study patients in order to improve early recognition of ischemic infarction by CT and thus to improve patient care, and to provide material for practice. In this book each CT scan can be read with and without neuroradiological description. Follow-up scans of each case confirm early findings.

Description: This small paperback compendium of sequential brain CT scans in stroke patients is designed to illustrate subtle, early ischemic changes in the brain.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate the neurologist and neuroradiologist with regard to the recognition and implications of early CT changes accompanying ischemic brain infarction. Should thrombolytic therapy for the treatment of stroke become accepted, such skills assume greater significance. The book failed to illustrate false positive changes that could leave the reader with a false sense of competence.
Audience: This book is written for the practicing neurologist and neuroradiologist who must make therapeutic decisions regarding stroke based on an initial brain CT. The authors were participants in ECASS (European Cooperative Acute Stroke Study).
Features: Twenty case studies showing initial and follow-up brain CTs are presented and analyzed. The book is not meant as a reference text, but rather as a workbook. Illustrations are of good quality.
Assessment: This small book is directed at the clinician who needs guidance in evaluating the distinguishing features of early ischemic changes on brain CT. The authors share their vast experience by providing illustrative cases from the ECASS effort.
