It's pretty amazing that this video exists. The footage was shot before Buckethead had any kind of national exposure, mostly with his band the Deli Creeps. It was shot on Super 8, but the quality of both the video and the audio is surprisingly good (although there is some audio distortion at times). The Deli Creeps were a strange kind of metal band that bordered on performance art at times, with Buckethead's silent automaton schtick offsetting Maximum Bob's obsessional ravings. The first clip from the Kennel Club shows that the Buckethead persona was already well in place in 1991, with Buckethead whipping out his robotic moves with the ever present mask. His playing is pretty amazing, particularly the solo on the first cut where he plays the entire solo holding the guitar by the neck with one hand (that's right, no picking). There's also a backstage clip from the same show. The next clip is actually the first gig for the Deli Creeps, and this one is really interesting. Instead of the staid, robotic Buckethead we all know and love, this Buckethead is a shirtless teenager dancing around all over the place and having an absolute gas playing music live on-stage. He does pull out some Buckethead moves, but mostly he's a real, live boy having the time of his life. It's really fun to watch. The final clip is an odd interview in the park (yes, Buckethead CAN talk!) that features director/cameraman Jas Obrecht asking just the right questions, and ends with two apparent strangers being enticed to beat a shopping cart to death. Good stuff, and an interesting early look at an oddball semi-legend. ~ Sean Westergaard
