Initially broadcast on US television in 1979, Star Blazers was the first burst of high-grade Japanese anime that many Americans had ever seen. An entire generation of fans made the big switch from kiddie cartoons thanks in no small part to this brilliantly designed, striking animated tale of space warfare populated with three-dimensional characters who sometimes (gasp!) died and often despaired. Conceived by creators as serious science fiction, The Super Friends and Star Blazers was not. Some viewers may have found the space dogfights and cute robot designs uncomfortably close to Star Wars, but in fact, the original 1974-75 Japanese airing of Star Blazers (known as Uchu Senkan Yamato, meaning "Space Battleship Yamato") pre-dated Lucas' film by three years. In the year 2199, the Earth is under attack by hostile forces from the planet Gamilon. A constant hail of radiation bombs have made our world nearly uninhabitable and in one year's time, life will finally vanish from Earth. Queen Starsha from the planet Iscandar offers help in the form of the Cosmo DNA, a device that will rid the Earth of it's radiation woes. The problem lies in finding a way to get to Starsha's planet, located million of light years away and deep in the heart of enemy territory. With few resources left, the hull of a sunken World War II battleship is retrofitted into a advanced space ship whose crew must make the long cosmic round trip in 365 days. The American distributor of Star Blazers made a few cuts, erased some Japanese cultural references, and even covered up a couple of deaths. Yet enough remained of the well-scripted character interactions and action-packed adventure to make a big impression. Although a flurry of "Yamato" sequels and films appeared in the it's wake, fans on both sides of the Pacific would probably agree, the first season of Star Blazers, contained on this six-disc set, represents the epitome of classic Japanese animation. Star Blazers reads like a deadly serious Star Trek. Main-character hot-shot Derek Wildstar is like William Shatner at his scenery-chewing best -- macho to the max, with the requisite tragic past, hair-trigger temper, and aboslute conviction.
