Description: This excellent book, the 58th in the Contemporary Neurology Series, is an overview of evaluation and management of the spine and spinal cord disorders.
Purpose: The three authors, specialists in neuro-ontology, spine surgery, and molecular aspects of neurological disease, succeed in providing a medium-length treatment for neurologists in practice or in training.
Audience: Neurosurgeons or orthopedic surgeons also would find this book valuable. Internists and family practitioners would profit, especially from the first three chapters, and could use the book for reference.
Features: In the introductory chapters the authors deal with anatomy, pathophysiology, symptomatology, and physical examination of the spine and its neural elements. Various categories of spinal cord illnesses and traumas and degenerative conditions are also presented. Brief discussions of surgical and nonsurgical management of trauma are used to conclude the book. The segmental and peripheral innervation of the skeletal muscles are detailed in a three-page appendix. Numerous radiologic images and illustrations and tables are employed. For the most part, the images and illustrations are of high quality. The references are appropriately numerous and up-to-date through about 1998. The best sections for a practicing neurologist are those on neoplastic, inflammatory, and infectious disorders. Coverage of spine trauma is necessarily brief; a neurologist would find it to be a useful introduction to the topic. The treatments of paraspinal strain, epidural and facet joint injections, and osteoporosis are quite limited.
Assessment: This is an enjoyable and useful text. It is highly accessible in terms of writing style and clarity, length, and cost. It should prove to be widely read and appreciated by neurologists. For surgically-treated problems of the spine, one of the much larger works, such as Herkowitz's Rothman-Simeone The Spine (W.B. Saunders 1998) would offer more depth.
