About the Author

Annalynn Skipper Ph.D., R.D., FADA, is a consultant devoted to advancing nutrition practice.'She has more than two decades of experience as a nutrition support dietitian at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia and at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago where she became Co-Director of a six or seven member multidisciplinary nutrition support team.'Annalynn was an early advocate of specialty dietitian certification and became the second dietitian to earn the CNSD when that certification was developed.'She has authored dozens of original research and practice papers including her award winning research describing the concepts of advanced dietetics practice as well as directing research into calcium phosphorus composition of parenteral formulas and the incidence and prevention of refeeding syndrome.'She has edited and authored books on nutrition support, advanced medical nutrition therapy practice and order writing privileges.'An advocate for dietitians, she has served in many volunteer positions including a term on ASPEN’s Board of Directors.'She has also served the Institute of Medicine and the American Dietetic Association.'She currently serves as a consultant to acute and chronic care facilities across the US, including several of the nation’s most distinguished hospitals.'''''

This book provides a practical approach to enteral and parenteral nutrition using current information provided by experts in the field of nutritional support therapy. This text is an updated version of the original published in 1990. It is designed to support introductory level nutrition support for critical care nutrition courses and to serve as a practical reference. Evolving knowledge and increased need for nutritional modifications on the disease process has moved enteral and parenteral feeding into the realm of nutritional pharmacology. This book was written for nutrition support specialists and dietitians. The editor has recruited an impressive list of expert contributors, of which 17 are new to this edition. The book has 24 chapters divided into four parts. It is organized in a progressive manner beginning with the selection of candidates for nutrition support, then reviewing the impact of organ function and disease process on nutritional status. Nutrient delivery and organizational considerations are also discussed. The book includes black-and-white illustrations and an index. Eight new chapters have been added to this second edition to cover nutritional support in diabetes and glucose control, pancreatic function, bone marrow transplantation, HIV and AIDS, solid organ transplantation, and burns. This is a much-needed reference manual for dietitians and health care practitioners who provide specialized nutrition support. The field of nutrition support has grown and evolved to encompass a very broad and sophisticated knowledge base. This second edition is needed in that it includes current information provided by experts in the field. This reference can serve as a guideto practitioners to enhance the care of clients under their care.
