About the Author

Amit Tevar, MD is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Transplantation at the University of Cincinnati. He also is the director of Surgical Student Education, the Transplant Surgery Fellowship Program, and the Pancreas Transplant Program. Dr. Tevar graduated with his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Indiana University's Medical School and finished his solid organ transplant fellowship at the University of Chicago. He came to the University of Cincinnati in 2004 as a Transplant Fellow.

Description: This surgical review book uses a concise question/answer format to help third and fourth year medical students understand the basic pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of surgical diseases. However, it is not meant to be the only resource for medical students on a surgery clerkship. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The goal is to provide high-yield information for diagnosis and management of surgical disease. This type of book is useful as quick overview because surgery clerkship is a busy rotation. It is an excellent guide for rounds and surgery shelf exams.
Audience: Although it is written for third and fourth year medical students, the book may even be useful for general surgery interns. If students master the information presented in this book, they will do very well on the shelf exam and the clerkship rotation. The authors are a combination of attending staff and residents.
Features: The book covers topics based on organ systems and subspecialties, and it also includes critical care, wound healing, and trauma. A section of clinical vignettes at the end of the book guides students through the step-by-step process of diagnosing and treating patients. The book presents basic anatomy as well as critical steps and diagrams for common surgical procedures seen on a general surgery rotation. The illustrations are also a great feature.
Assessment: This would be a valuable asset for third or fourth year medical students. It also would be useful to read before starting a general surgery residency. Mastery of the information in this book would help students do well on the shelf exam, perform well on rounds, and think like surgeons.
