Description: This is the first edition of a book describing key aspects of mechanical ventilation.
Purpose: This moderate sized work is intended to bridge the gap between journals and larger comprehensive books.
Audience: Junior and senior trainees needing an introduction to or an update in mechanical ventilation are an appropriate audience for this work originating in the British Commonwealth.
Features: After a review of respiratory physiology, the book introduces noninvasive ventilation and the varying presentations of respiratory failure. Management of oxygenation and carbon dioxide exchange are then discussed, followed by a compilation of modes of mechanical ventilation and application of this technology to children and to patients with reactive airway disease, chest trauma, or burns. Concluding chapters discuss weaning, long-term support, and management of the airway. Chapters are clearly written and wonderfully illustrated with multicolor plates. Illustrations provide an excellent review of basic physiology. Photographs are occasionally used, which reproduce with adequate quality. Chapters include reference lists of moderate length typically featuring primary work dating to within two to four years of publication. The table of contents lists chapters and authorship while a concluding subject index of 15 pages and glossary of five pages allow adequate access to content and enhance consistent terminology.
Assessment: This is an excellent introduction to the physiology, history, and technology of mechanical ventilation, the defining event of critical care. The illustrations are superb. Surprisingly, there is a lack of a focused discussion of the management of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome and excessive detail on ventilator modes.
