Purpose: The purpose is to present an easy-to-use reference on the latest thinking in medical care for clinicians of all specialties and disciplines.
Audience: This book details the current concepts in simple terms, making it useful for all levels of medical practitioners, those in supporting disciplines, and laypersons.
Features: The book is divided into 22 sections generally organized by organ system, but also by specific focus topics such as symptomatic care pending diagnosis, allergy, women's health, men's health, pregnancy, physical and chemical injuries, and preventive health. Each chapter in a section addresses specific topics, such as immunizations, travel medicine, hypertension in pregnancy, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, nevi, and dry eye disease. A typical chapter begins with a summary that includes definitions and current treatments followed by short discussions of relevant topics. Many figures, algorithms, and boxes make the information readily recognizable. The references at the end of each chapter are current and relevant. The appendixes are well organized with information that would be deep in a chapter and rarely needed but should be readily available, such as biological agents, herbal and nutritional supplements with precautions and drug interactions, and toxic chemicals.
Assessment: This is an essential addition to every primary care clinician's library. It is a definitive yet concise compendium of the standards of medical care based on the current evidence.
