The purpose of this dictionary is to provide a convenient and affordable personal desk reference resource. Scope The dictionary is centred on pharmacologically active agents. Workers in drug-related diSCiplines need to correctly identify individual agents from an arsenal of pharmacologically active compounds, each with a number of alternative drug names according to the country or naming convention.

The authors have put together a single, up-to-date book encompassing material that previously could be obtained only from many sources. These are worthy objectives as one may have a name of a drug and would like to know what type of drug it is and how it works. The objectives of the authors have been achieved for the most part with this up-to-date listing of various pharmacological agents.
Audience: This book is intended for pharmacologists and medicinal chemists from graduate student to established worker. It should also be valuable to workers in allied biomedical disciplines, such as biochemistry and physiology, as well as to medical students, graduate students, science writers, and editors. The authors have many years of experience in pharmacological research, teaching, and editing.
Features: The A-Z section of the book contains details of individual drugs together with their alternative names, classified into families according to mechanism and use. Also listed are agents not of themselves of therapeutic value but important as pharmacological tools. The glossary (Appendix A) is an alphabetical reference of biomedical terms. Appendix B includes amino acid abbreviations and Greek and Latin multiplicative prefixes.
Assessment: The best thing about the book is the dictionary. This is a quick and handy way to determine drug type of a particular agent. The glossary is useful, but a medical dictionary contains similar material plus additional terms. Appendix B for the most part does not seem very useful.
