About the Author

Eric J. Mash, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Calgary and Affiliate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association and of the Society of Clinical Psychology, the Society for Child and Family Policy and Practice, the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, and the Society of Pediatric Psychology of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Mash is also a Fellow and Charter Member of the Association for Psychological Science. He has served as an editor, editorial board member, and editorial consultant for numerous journals and has published widely on child and adolescent psychopathology, assessment, and treatment.

Russell A. Barkley, PhD, ABPP, ABCN, before retiring in 2021, served on the faculties of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, the Medical University of South Carolina, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Barkley has worked with children, adolescents, and families since the 1970s and is the author of numerous bestselling books for both professionals and the public, including Taking Charge of ADHD and Your Defiant Child. He has also published six assessment scales and more than 300 scientific articles and book chapters on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, executive functioning, and childhood defiance. A frequent conference presenter and speaker who is widely cited in the national media, Dr. Barkley is past president of the Section on Clinical Child Psychology (the former Division 12) of the American Psychological Association (APA), and of the International Society for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology. Description: This is the third edition of a well-respected book on child psychopathology by very capable authors.
Purpose: This edition updates about a decade's worth of new information and research, as well as the changes in psychopathology definitions and criteria resulting from DSM-5.
Audience: This is appropriate for any clinicians involved in pediatric behavioral health, from psychologists to psychiatrists to pediatricians. It is written at a more advanced level, but can be appropriate for graduate level courses as well as for practicing clinicians. The editors and authors are well respected in the field and are frequent contributors to the scholarly literature.
Features: The book is divided into sections based on the diagnostic categories with specific disorders covered in each chapter. Chapters cover the same basic areas: historical perspective; nature of the behavior, symptoms, or deficits; criteria to establish the diagnosis; epidemiological knowledge; developmental course; comorbidity; and etiology. Each chapter aims to provide current information from the literature, limitations of our knowledge or areas of controversy, and future directions for study, and these goals are largely met. It is also refreshing to see additional factors covered, such as sociodemographic, cultural, and gender differences that should be well within diagnostic and treatment considerations for clinicians. Additionally, there is excellent coverage of pathological entities that are research supported, but not necessarily in the official DSM-5 nomenclature. This can help clinicians advance their true understanding of these conditions well beyond a few criteria on a page. One drawback is the fairly dense text with tables that are helpful, but very few figures or graphs that would help with data assimilation, especially for epidemiological data. It is surprising to see entire chapters without any visual aids besides a DSM criteria table. The references are pertinent and have been updated to the last year, probably the time book went to press.
Assessment: This is a stellar offering for child psychopathology and continues a tradition of being a leading text in the field. This edition clearly has been updated with current references to ongoing changes in the field. It is well worth acquiring to stay abreast of the literature in this vast area.

This book contains 16 chapters covering five domains of childhood disorders: behavioral (e.g., conduct and oppositional defiant disorder), emotional and social (e.g., depression, anxiety), developmental and learning (e.g., autism, schizophrenia), health (e.g., anorexia), and children at risk (e.g., child maltreatment). Each chapter provides a historical perspective of the disorder, presents epidemiological data, reviews diagnostic features and related symptoms, addresses the effects of sociodemographic variables (e.g., gender, culture) on child psychopathology, and integrates diverse etiological models with current research on biological and social correlates. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive summary and update of the research literature on childhood disorders by the most knowledgeable experts in the field. Chapter authors were instructed to write everything they know about the disorder and to suggest directions for future research. The authors' objectives are important and noteworthy, and they accomplish their goals. This book appears to be written primarily for academic psychologists and psychiatrists, graduate students, and those interested in keeping up-to-date with the most pressing issues in the field of child psychopathology. Researchers in particular will find the chapters to be an excellent review of the literature. Contributors include the most knowledgeable and recognized experts in the field. Chapters are consistently well organized and include multiple headings for easy reading. Tables and figures supplement the text. Reference lists are extensive and recent; most citations were published in the 1990s. A subject and author index are provided. This bookoffers an illuminating comprehensive survey of diverse childhood disorders. Well-written chapters review what we know and what we do not know about the diagnosis, epidemiology, causes, and correlates of child psychopathology. Coverage of the topics is so thorough that this book is likely to be a definitive reference in the field for a long time.
