Description: Containing more than 600 questions with answers and explanations, this book prepares readers for the Certification in Public Health (CPH) Exam. The book has an accompanying website with an option to see answers, explanations, and hyperlinked sources directly after each question rather than at the end of the section. Unique to the website is a list of keywords for each chapter and links to related content.
Purpose: This is a key resource for individuals preparing to take the CPH exam, but without access to a practice exam it does not prepare students for the time restriction or format of the test. Having direct access to answers, explanations, and hyperlinked sources after each question on the online version of the book adds convenience and value. The objectives to introduce each domain area of the exam and provide readers with a wide range of questions are appropriately met in the book, but without access to a practice quiz the book is not as thorough as it claims to be.
Audience: The book is intended for individuals who are qualified to sit for the CPH exam: current students of a public health program, alumni of a public health program, or public health workers with significant experience. With sample questions and detailed explanations from each domain area on the exam, as well as conveniently listed sources for each question to expand on the information provided, the book is an important resource for its intended audience. To fully meet their preparation needs, however, the book must be accompanied by a practice exam. The author has more than a decade's worth of experience in the academic field of public health.
Features: The book is divided into 10 chapters covering each of the 10 exam domain areas as outlined by the National Board of Public Health Examiners. Each chapter begins with an introduction detailing the topic, the focus of the questions, and a bulleted list of competency objectives. At least 60 multiple-choice, single-best answer questions are provided for each chapter including multi-question scenarios when applicable. Answers, explanations, and sources for each question are listed at the end of the chapter. This is a valuable and appropriate resource for the CPH exam. All features and elements in the book are equally available on website. An index ends the book.
Assessment: With questions that are easy to follow and a detailed, informative answer key, this is a valuable resource for anyone preparing for the CPH exam. It provides sources for each question, giving readers a valuable opportunity to learn more about specific topics and research difficult questions. The book is comparable with the amount of questions and detailed answers as the other two review guides recommended by the National Board of Public Health Examiners, but it lacks the practice exams that the Association of Schools & Programs of Public Health online review subscription offers.
