Description: This book devoted entirely to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most comprehensive resource on the subject now available. This volume (240) in a large series under the executive editorship of Claude Lenfant, Lung Biology in Health and Disease, is a follow-up to volume 196 on Lung Injury: Mechanisms, Pathophysiology, and Therapy, Notter et al., published in 2005.
Purpose: According to the editor, "this volume provides new insights into the pathobiology and treatment of BPD." Dr. Abman has assembled the foremost authorities in the world on this subject and his book is encyclopedic in its coverage. Given the large percentage of very low birth weight infants who develop this complication of prematurity (30-35%), this is a worthy objective and it is met well by this book.
Audience: The intended audience is neonatologists, pediatric pulmonologists, and scientists who are working in the area of pulmonary pathobiology. This is an incredible resource, extremely comprehensive and well referenced. However, treating bedside physicians may find its approach too detailed for use as a guide to daily clinical care. The editor and the contributors are all internationally recognized authorities in this field.
Features: The book's four sections cover lung growth and development, mechanisms of lung injury and repair, clinical and genetic aspects of BPD, and emerging therapies. It is especially strong in the areas of the molecular biology aspects of growth, transcription factors, and cell-cell interactions as integral aspects of lung development. The last section on emerging therapies is quite up to date and on the cutting edge of clinical care. Despite some chapters on epidemiology, benchmarking, and ventilation strategies to decrease BPD, the book might benefit from more mundane approaches to reducing the incidence of this disease, such as the quality improvement programs developed by the Vermont-Oxford Network.
Assessment: This is a unique and extremely valuable resource for the care and treatment of infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. It is encyclopedic in its coverage and well written by the leading authorities in this field. Dr. Abman has pulled together decades of work and research since Dr. Northway's initial description of this problem in 1967. This book is a landmark contribution which, hopefully, will lead to enhanced efforts to reduce the incidence and/or severity of this disease.
