Description: Part of the Biopsy Interpretation series, this is the second edition of a book that focuses on soft tissue pathology. The first edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a practical guide to the diagnosis of soft tissue tumors using a cytomorphologic pattern approach.
Audience: The book is intended primarily for practicing surgical pathologists, but pathology residents and fellows also would find it helpful.
Features: The informative first chapter covers the general concepts of biopsy techniques, diagnostic methods, and reporting of soft tissue lesions. Clear tables summarize and highlight the essential immunohistochemical stains and the genetic abnormalities of benign and malignant soft tissue tumors. Grading and staging are also covered in this chapter. The remaining chapters use a multifaceted approach to the diagnosis of soft tissue tumors. The most common approach is the cytomorphologic, but other chapters also group diseases by line of differentiation (adipose, nerve sheath, etc.), prognosis, specific anatomic locations, or just deal with one specific entity (e.g. liposarcoma). The book is extensively illustrated and the quality of most of the microscopic images is excellent. However, these images are somewhat small in size.
Assessment: This is a helpful reference on common and uncommon entities in soft tissue pathology that pathologists will find useful in daily sign-out. It is concise and to the point, easy to read and understand, and very well organized. Chapters are short and can be read quickly without being overwhelmed by superfluous details. Although small, the pictures are representative and of excellent quality. Tables summarizing the most salient features nicely complement the text. Overall this is an excellent, quick reference guide to soft tissue tumors and a must have alongside every microscope.
