Description: This hardbound textbook reviews trauma operations including indications, main operative steps, and common complications and pitfalls.
Purpose: The purpose is to present illustrations of common trauma procedures to prepare non-trauma surgeons to care for traumatically injured patients.
Audience: Trauma surgeons, general surgeons who are not trauma subspecialty trained, and surgical trainees (both residents and fellows) are all an appropriate audience for this work.
Features: Each chapter of this 13-chapter book is focused on a single traumatically injured organ/system. Each chapter reviews relevant anatomy, operative indications, general step-by-step procedures, common pitfalls to avoid during surgery, and brief descriptions of complications associated with the intervention. The chapters are well designed and follow a familiar pattern throughout the book. Its greatest strength stems from the illustrations and photographs. The illustrations delineate anatomy well and show operative techniques clearly. The cadaveric dissections shown in several of the models show relevant anatomy with appropriate exposures. Errors are minimal in the prose, photos, and illustrations; however, there are a few errors (such as inappropriate coloration of the aorta and vena cava on page 38). Each chapter's works cited page is well tabulated; resources cited are often classic/seminal articles that are appropriate but occasionally dated. The table of contents and contributors list are formatted well. The index is attenuated, and some terms are listed in non-intuitive subsections making them hard to find.
Assessment: This book is a wonderful resource for non-trauma surgeons as well as trainees. The illustrations and step-by-step nature of the procedures truly are the strength of the book, which prepares people to perform complex operations on traumatically injured patients. It is well organized, brief, and appropriate for rapid review before a trauma shift or operative procedure. It is an ideal resource for people who may be taking care of trauma patients but lack trauma exposure in their daily practices - surgeons in resource poor environments, deployed military surgeons, and surgeons caring for traumatically injured patients at a new job who may not have done so for some time.
