Description: Coronaviruses infect a wide range of animal species, including birds and humans, and are important veterinary pathogens causing significant economic losses worldwide. Novel coronaviruses have been identified in the past several decades, and they have drawn significant attention as emerging viruses. This book is the first to illustrate experimental and diagnostic protocols for various animal coronaviruses. Both a hard copy and an online version are available.
Purpose: This book is unique in presenting current technologies available for detection of animal coronaviruses and research especially for diagnostic methodologies. The intention is to provide specific protocols and methods for individual coronaviruses, both conventional approaches and state-of-the art technologies. It presents a total of 19 protocols, and many of the contributors are diagnosticians who handle clinical specimens on a daily basis in diagnostic laboratories.
Audience: The primary audience is diagnosticians, interns, and residents who work in the laboratory, but graduate students and researchers will benefit as well.
Features: The book covers both standard virological techniques and molecular techniques for animal coronaviruses. Notable additions are the protocols for detection of equine coronavirus and ferret coronavirus, both recently identified. Emerging viruses in pigs, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus and porcine deltacoronavirus are also included. The differential diagnostic test for feline coronavirus and infectious peritonitis virus can be a problematic, but the protocol in this book will be a useful guide for clinicians and diagnosticians. The chapters for reverse genetics approaches to avian infectious coronavirus and feline coronavirus will also be useful for researchers in the field. The application of next generation sequencing techniques to whole genome sequencing of porcine coronaviruses in the fecal samples are particularly interesting and will be useful for beginners to adapt such an approach to research and diagnostic developments.
