Overview

This volume "Angiogenesis in Brain Tumors" is part of the book series "Cancer Treatment and Research" and offers a detailed overview of the biology of angiogenesis in the central nervous system, the role of angiogenesis in brain tumor development and growth, and anti-angiogenic therapeutic applications. Our understanding of the mutual relationship between tumor growth and concomitant neovascularization has provided important insights into the biology of brain tumors and contributed to the development of new treatment strategies. Many of the early experimental findings on angiogenesis were made using brain tumor models. This was largely due to the fact that brain tumors are among the highest vascularized tumors. In addition, until to date all efforts to develop efficient therapies for these highly malignant tumors have met with little if any success . The scientific evidence on the role of angiogenesis in tumor development accumulated until today has already let to the initiation of several clinical trials. Despite the fact that not all expectations have been fulfilled, the results available so far are promising and suggest that anti­ angiogenic therapeutic strategies may be of benefit to our brain tumor patients in the near future. The volume is comprised of four sections . The first section is dedicated to the principles of angiogenesis in the central nervous system and gives an overview on the cellular, physiological and developmental processes of angiogenesis.

Description: The development of neuro-oncology paralleled the acquisition of new modalities of imaging and neurochemical reactions capable of determining different markers and evidence of proliferation. Updates in the field are always necessary since new therapies may stem from scientific advances.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to address the different factors involved in angiogenesis in brain tumors. These necessary and worthy objectives are well addressed by the authors.
Audience: Neurologists, neurophysiologists, and neurosurgeons would find in this an excellent contribution to the field. The authors are well known experts in clinical and surgical oncology. Many of them have set the main guidelines for the therapy of oncologic conditions.
Features: The 19 chapters are written by 36 authors. The book progresses from the basic science of CNS tumor angiogenesis to ways to clinically and radiographically determine these changes. Besides the excellent illustrations and examples, the book is replete with novel modalities of treatment that will potentially influence the manner CNS neoplasms are currently envisioned. One of the shortcomings is the absence of a dedicated neuroradiology section, in particular addressing strategies of identifying and treating proliferating neoplasms. In addition, there should be a description of potential methods to deliver growth factors, such as endovascular techniques. Those are not, however, major omissions and the book is overall of excellent quality for a justifiable price.
Assessment: This is a good source of information for neurological, neurosurgical, and general medical libraries. However, it is an addition to the major neuro-oncology textbooks already available.
