Description: This comprehensive review of the technological advances in medical informatics emphasizes the integration of these advances into the clinical practice of anesthesiology.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe medical informatics and its impact on the practice of anesthesia. Given the increasing role medical informatics is playing in clinical practice, this is a worthwhile objective.
Audience: Practicing anesthesiologists who have questions about medical informatics and will be incorporating it into their clinical practice are the intended audience. While residents and medical students also may benefit from it, the book will be most useful to those who are in practice and, in the words of the authors, have a "problem to solve." The editors and authors of the individual chapters all have experience in the area of medical informatics and do a good job of sharing their expertise.
Features: The book reviews all aspects of anesthesia informatics, the role it currently plays in operating rooms, and, of course, what role it will play going forward. Of particular interest are chapters addressing potential improvement in patient safety through use of an automated system in the operating room, particularly in the area of reduction of medication errors. While the book is well written, the addition of more color illustrations/pictures would make it easier to read. However, this is a minor point given the wealth of information the book contains.
Assessment: This is certainly an evolving area of study in medicine and anesthesia, and this book is a worthy contribution to the field. As technologies continue to change rapidly and implementation of these into clinical practice becomes near mandatory, sources such as this are vital.
