Overview

The field of androgen excess disorders has advanced substantially since the original publication of this book. The Androgen Excess Society (AES) was founded to bring together investigators in the field. A better understanding of the screening, progression, and molecular genetics of nonclassic adrenal hyperplasia (NCAH) has improved the clinical care and diagnostic accuracy of these patients. New criteria for the diagnosis of the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were proposed in Rotterdam, criteria that have resulted in controversy and, hopefully, initiation of new studies. The association of insulin resistance with PCOS has been strengthened, and the role of metformin in tre- ing the infertility of the PCOS has been validated. Risks for diabetes and, more cont- versially, cardiovascular disease in women with PCOS have received substantial investigation. Our understanding of the epidemiology and economic impact of these disorders has expanded, emphasizing their critical importance. These are but a few highlights of how the terrain has changed in a relatively brief period of time. In keeping with these advances, the title of this book has been revised to reflect the growing importance of PCOS as the most prevalent androgen excess disorder in women, and arguably, as the one that might have the most serious adverse consequences for general health. There are fewer chapters to provide a more focused elucidation of the area. Several chapters were penned by new (and young) authors who are conducting cutting-edge research in the field.

It will be an often-consulted reference book for endocrinologists, internists, pediatricians, and gynecologists who care for women with hirsutism, and I recommend it for students, of all ages, with an interest in this complex field.

This book on androgen excess disorders in women fills a void in the gynecologic literature. Its three editors have assembled the work of 99 authors from 11 countries. Its aim is ""to provide a thorough yet concise overview of the current state of the art of androgen excess research, diagnosis, and therapy."" Although hardly concise at 830 pages, it otherwise fulfills its aims, providing an excellent overview of an often incompletely understood group of disorders. The intended audience is broad, encompassing investigators and clinicians dealing with androgenized patients, including medical, reproductive, and pediatric endocrinologists, gynecologists, dermatologists, and generalists. While the book may provide too much information for some generalists, there are certainly chapters relevant to the general clinician. The book is an outstanding reference for clinical endocrinologists, as well as basic and clinical research scientists. The book benefits from contributions from a wide variety of well respected experts, the references are current, and the book is very well organized. There is a consistent style, despite a large number of contributors, and the synopsis at the end of each chapter is an excellent idea. The diagrams explaining molecular mechanisms are also excellent. This work is an outstanding reference for the specialist dealing with androgen disorders in women. It should be a part of every endocrinology and obstetric and gynecology library, as well as the personal library of the physician treating androgenized females.

Description: This is a thoughtful, focused approach to androgen excess in women. The book is well organized and the format makes identification of specific topics easy.
Purpose: According to the preface, the purpose is to provide a guide and resource for all clinicians and researchers in the field of androgen excess. It is nice to find so many topics that are usually addressed in a fragmented fashion in one source discussed by leaders in the field. The editors achieved their objective.
Audience: This book is targeted at both researchers and clinicians in the field of androgen excess and it serves that audience well. The editors and many of the authors are well known in the field.
Features: The chapters are divided according to physiology, uncommon causes of androgen excess, polycystic ovary syndrome, and evaluation and treatment. Each of the individual chapters is also well organized with a summary, clear topic headings, conclusions, future directions, and key points. The book is all in black and white and the use of figures varies between chapters. Most chapters had helpful figures, but a few chapters were lacking illustrations.
Assessment: This is a good resource. It is helpful to have so many aspects of androgen excess addressed in a single source by knowledgeable authors.
