In this standout work, Ueda (history, Tufts Univ.) contends that examining the origins, developments, heritage, and traditions of U.S. ethnic and immigrant neighborhoods provides an insightful perspective into contemporary life and leads to a better understanding of modern society. Part 1 consists of summaries of the racial and ethnic history and current ethnic and religious composition of each state and the District of Columbia (primarily through "historical population" tables and "population by ethnic group" tables). The next section features 180 alphabetically arranged signed entries of important neighborhoods, with excellent cross-referencing, sidebars, and suggestions for further reading. The third part is an appendix of U.S. enclaves with the highest proportion of a particular ancestry. Many of the sketches in the appendix are also accompanied by tables listing current population estimates for the groups.
