About the Author

Janette B. Benson is an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Denver. She served for five years as the Director of the University-wide Office of Academic Assessment and co-chaired the successful University reaccreditation. Most recently she served as the Associate Dean of the Morgridge College of Education (2014-2017). Dr. Benson’s expertise is in cognitive and sensorimotor development in infancy and early childhood, and her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, The MacArthur Foundation and the March of Dimes. Dr. Benson has published several articles, book chapters and has edited or co-edited several books, including The Encyclopedia of Infancy and Early Childhood Development. She has been the recipient of several awards and honors, including the University of Denver Scholar – Teacher of the Year (1993), the 2000 CASE Colorado Professor of the Year, a Carnegie Scholar, a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, member of the Board of Directors of Shortridge Academy, and the serial editor of Advances in Child Development and Behavior.

Description: The book explores a number of topics in child development including cognitive development, perceptual development, moral reasoning, mother-child interaction, and mindfulness-based programs. This is volume 58 in the Academic Press series, "Advances in Child Development and Behavior," beginning in 1963.
Purpose: According to the book, "in this volume, timely and important topics have been brought together to address cutting edge empirical and theoretical trends in the study of development." These are worthy objectives, which have been met.
Audience: According to the book, it is written for developmental, cognitive, and social psychologists and scientists, developmental cognitive and social neuroscientists, as well as a wide range of clinicians and practitioners who work with typical children and those from special populations. The book meets the needs of its intended audience. The series editor is a credible expert on the subject, though only her association with the University of Denver is disclosed. The other contributors are affiliated with well-known institutions of higher learning in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.
Features: The book begins with a discussion of mental rotation in infancy. Research shows that this can occur as early as three months, though there may be sex differences in mental rotation performance. The way infants respond to social categories may predict later responding in both adolescence and adulthood. According to research, members of a social group feel morally obligated toward each other as opposed to those outside the group. Social learning in children is influenced by whether the information is positively or negatively valenced. There is interesting information about whom children learn to put their trust in, especially in unfamiliar people. Attachment between infants and parents occurs in both behavioral and physiological realms. This impacts self-regulation and socio-emotional health. The effect of mindfulness training is unclear in children. The book ends with a discussion of children's future-oriented cognition. The book is readable and contains tables that help clarify the text.
Assessment: This book contains useful information about different topics in child development and will be of great benefit to clinicians and researchers in the field. As seen in volume 58, yearly updates are needed because ongoing research provides so much new information.
