About the Author

Brent Luu, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP, is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. He teaches the Pharmacology series of courses in the Master of Science, Nurse Practitioner, and Master of Health Sciences, Physician Assistant Studies degree programs. He has extensive experience in a variety of pharmacy practice settings, including acute care, ambulatory care, oncology, and home infusion, in addition to related management experience.

Gerald Kayingo, PhD, PA-C, is the director of the Master of Health Services, Physician Assistant Studies program, and an assistant clinical professor at the University of California (UC), Davis.

Virginia McCoy Hass, DNP, MSN, RN, FNP-C, PA-C, is associate clinical professor; former director, Master of Science Nurse Practitioner Degree Program; and former interim director, Master of Health Services Physician Assistant Studies Degree Program at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, University of California (UC), Davis.

Description: This book presents evidence-based information for medication prescribers to safely prescribe medications for patients with most major illnesses and diseases. The book covers pharmacotherapeutics from a therapeutic approach, considering how medications work in the body and potential adverse effects. Students who purchase the book also have access to the online version. The ancillary resources for faculty are included with PowerPoint slides, a test bank, and an image bank.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide learners with a therapeutic approach to major medical disorders and their pharmacologic treatment. There is a focus on how medications work in the body and evidence-based treatments in a concise and well-balanced method that is clinically relevant. The book is a valuable contribution with worthy objectives. The online format does not enhance the presentation of the book, but offers a digital text. The summaries of the case studies are helpful, but an online discussion could do the same. The objectives are met because there are guidelines, standards, and references to support the evidence-based therapeutics, and the chapters follow the learning objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter.
Audience: The book is a collaborative effort with authors from various professions. According to the authors, it is a textbook that can be used by nurse practitioner students, pharmacy students, physician assistant students, and even medical students. However, I think it might be a resource best used by pharmacy students. It is a unique textbook because of the collaboration of the authors and therefore appeals to a wide audience whose needs are all met. The credibility of the numerous authors is impressive. The professions represented are numerous with terminal degrees in the specialty and reputable institutional affiliations.
Features: The title is clear that the book is written for anyone prescribing medications/treatments for patients with a variety of medical disorders. It implies that the book will be about prescribing medications because it includes the word "pharmacology." The online book is the same as the printed text. The glossary is at the beginning of each chapter, there are no appendixes, and color art is minimal so as to not distract from the text.
Assessment: I like this book very much and will review it for adoption to my advanced pharmacology class. It is concise and brief, unlike Pharmacotherapeutics for Advanced Practice Nurse Prescribers, 5th edition, Woo and Robinson (F. A. Davis, 2020). It is superior to Pharmacology for the Primary Care Provider, 4th edition, Edmunds and Mayhew (Elsevier, 2014) in content and it seems to be without errors and up to date. Overall, it is excellent.
