Description: This book is a condensed version of healthcare practices for nursing dealing with well and afflicted infants and children in the community. Cultural perspectives presented reflect contributions from the U.K.
Purpose: The purpose is "to provide community health nurses and their students with an up-to-date reference source." The application of this material is particularly relevant to the U.K. Social policies and programs differ from those of the U.S., confusing students who need to learn community health in areas other than the U.K. The editors' objectives are met through the three themes: Enhancing Child Well-Being and Development in the Family Context, Maintaining Optimal Family Nutrition, and Managing Common Childhood Problems.
Audience: According to the editors, this book is written for public health nurses and nursing students. I think it is written at an appropriate reading level for nursing students to grasp. Numerous contributors wrote chapters which include multidisciplinary areas in nursing, psychology, social work, and medicine with a large number of professionals adding to the credibility of the material presented.
Features: The common prevention areas that parents are encouraged to learn to care for their children are presented. The table of contents flows well, except in Part One, especially as the subject of post-natal depression does not fit as a separate chapter. Part One includes the child and family, and my expectation of that unit does not include newborn and postpartum issues. Organizing these parts specific to newborn, infant, children, and adolescents may enhance logical organization. I particularly liked the chapter on dental health, especially dosage information on fluoride treatments. The tables include logical information, but color pictures would increase interest. The paper stock used has a malodorous quality that detracted from reading enjoyment.
Assessment: Initially, upon reading the introduction, I thought this book was aimed too high for students. Upon review of chapters, I think information and tips on anticipatory guidance for parents are given that a community health nurse would appreciate. This source should be used only as a reference to common issues for prevention of health problems as no program planning is included as might be found in a community health text or complete pediatric text such as Wong's Whaley and Wong's Nursing Care of Infants and Children, 6th Edition (Mosby, 1999). I would encourage that those sources be purchased as a main text.
