Description: This is an easy-to-follow, quick review of practical cardiology with adequate information, illustrations, and references. The unique feature of this book is the evidence-based practice insertions that briefly go over the study design and results of pertinent sentinel trials.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide practical cardiology information to cardiology fellows, internists, anesthesiologists, and surgeons, a reasonable goal given that such issues as coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and arrhythmias are pertinent in all specialties.
Audience: The book is intended for postgraduate trainees and practitioners in medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. The authors have broadened the appeal of the book by inviting other specialists, from surgery, internal medicine, and pulmonary critical care, to contribute.
Features: The variety of cardiovascular topics begins with preventive cardiology and moves on to management of acute disease processes such as acute coronary syndrome and arrhythmias. A section is dedicated to cardiovascular tests and their interpretation. The most impressive aspect of the book is the inclusion of guidelines along with brief but sufficient explanation of sentinel cardiology trials that led to current practices. The illustrations in the arrhythmia section are also easy to follow.
Assessment: This is a very good source of general information about current cardiovascular practice on a basic level. It is easy to read and follow with a special focus on contemporary guidelines and practices. What makes this book attractive is that it is easy to read. The sacrifice that it makes in order to appeal to multiple specialties and a wider audience is that it is rather superficial for training or current cardiologists. However, it does provide a great overview for those interested in going into cardiology or those already practicing in fields that have exposure to patients with cardiovascular issues.
