Anne Perry (1938-2023) was an English author of historical crime fiction best known for her Thomas Pitt and William Monk mysteries. In 1979, Perry published her first novel, The Cater Street Hangman; it was the first book in the Thomas Pitt series, which would eventually include more than two dozen entries. As a teenager in New Zealand, Perry was convicted of murder and imprisoned for five years.
