Zodiac 37
Over fifty years ago, the notorious Zodiac Killer began terrorizing the Bay Area cities of Benicia, Vallejo, Napa and San Francisco. With little regard for human life, he attacked two couples in lover's lanes, one couple on a deserted beach and a taxi driver in an affluent neighborhood. From there, his reign of terror widened as he claimed a total of thirty–seven victims in Santa Rosa, Lake Tahoe and Modesto. He even threatened to shoot school children saying, "School children make nice targets. I think I shall wipe out a school bus some morning. Just shoot out the front tire and then pick off the kiddies as they come bouncing out." The infamous killer's weapons of choice were a High Standard .22 pistol, a .9-millimeter, semi-automatic, a double-edged bayonet and a switch blade. He also insinuated that he had a death machine being stored in his basement for future use. The elusive killer drove what is known today as a classic muscle car, a white Chevy Nova, to his crime scenes where he lurked in the shadows, wearing a mysterious, black, executioner's hood. Although few serial killers leave calling cards behind, the Zodiac made morbid phone calls to law enforcement, wrote an incriminating message on a victim's car door and used pieces of a victim's bloody shirt to prove his identity. Ironically, he had the gall to ask the people of San Francisco to wear some nice Zodiac buttons with his symbol on them saying that it would cheer him up considerably, while he terrorized their streets. Ever the egotist, he requested the world-renowned attorney, F. Lee Bailey, although he settled for the no-less-acclaimed lawyer, Melvin Beli. The definitive publicity hound, the Zodiac wrote eerie cryptograms to three, major, Bay Area newspapers, demanding that they display them on their front page or he would go on a "killing rampage." Over the years, reams of newspaper and magazine articles, as well as several books that appeared on the Best Sellers List, were written about him. Although he has yet to make a personal appearance, several movies and documentaries have been produced about him. And, more recently, numerous web pages have been created about him including ZodiacKiller.com that got over a million hits during its first month. My suspect, although in his early seventies, is still alive and well and living in an area not far from his crime scenes. He is a son, a brother, a father, a grandfather and a neighbor. Hiding in plain sight, he made a living as an ordinary salesman, coming into contact with thousands of people throughout his career. He posed himself as a church elder, worship leader and Sunday School teacher, all the while carrying a Bible for all to see. Today, he frequents restaurants, movie theaters, bookstores and grocery stores, yet most individuals would never suspect him of being anything more than the average man next door. Perhaps his biggest betrayal of all was playing the role of loving husband and father while he used his own, unsuspecting family as the ultimate façade to help him blend in with society. In the sixties, he drove a white, Chevy Nova, lived one-and-a-half miles from his first victim and went to school with her, matched the Napa Composite Drawing and fit the descriptions given of him by many eyewitnesses and victims. It is also possible that his name appeared in several of the Zodiac's coded messages. Worthy adversary, or just plain lucky, the Zodiac is still roaming the streets of Northern California, a free man. It is my sincere hope that this book will help attract the attention of law enforcement agents to my suspect and finally bring some justice to his victims and their loved ones.
