Overview

Zendoscopy is the story of Sherman, a young man coming of age in the 1950s and '60s. It takes him from his somewhat unconventional birth to his settling into marital bliss, albeit with plumbing problems. Along the way, Sherman faces occasionally serious and frequently hilarious adversity as he tries to gain worldly experience, especially with the opposite sex. Told in discrete episodes, the sum total is a story of social awakening along with a dollop of philosophy and eve a bit of cosmology.

About the Author

Zendoscopy is J. Allan Wolf's second book. He currently lives in Southern California, where he writes, rides road bikes to survive the heart attack he hasn't had yet, and talks to the world via ham radio. As an aspiring but very bad rock guitarist, he's been waiting for years to be besieged by groupies. So far, that hasn't worked out too well. His two daughters describe him as being smarter than he looks.

Wolf's prose is rich and polished. He keeps his readers engaged by focusing almost entirely on action and dialog rather than weighing down any particular piece with too much descriptive prose.
As for the meaning of the unusual title, "Zendoscopy," trust that there's a gratifying explanation at the end of the last story.

. Readers will easily identify with the trials and tribulations recounted here, from bullies and hideous acne to ballroom dance lessons, a momentous game of spin the bottle and fraternity high jinks. Most notably, readers witness Sherman's protracted quest to lose his virginity; when he finally achieves his goal, he gets more than he bargained for.
