Hubbard fans will welcome this collection of three Golden Age adventure tales: the over-the-top "Yukon Madness," the grim revenge drama "The Cossack," and the macho smackdown "The Small Boss of Nunaloha." Today's readers will best appreciate "The Cossack," in which Lt. Mertz Komroff contends with the imperious duchess of Novgrod. Shocking consequences follow when Komroff, who refuses to be unfaithful to his fiancée, rebuffs the duchess's advances. "Yukon Madness" features Itauk the Madman, who with his 12-wolf team delights in "spreading death with sharp steel and throwing the shattered bodies of men to his slavering team." Tommy McKenna of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, in his effort to stop Itauk, turns to Kaja, Itauk's battered, half-white girlfriend, for more than help. Less successful is "The Small Boss of Nunaloha," an action tale about Jim Lanridge, a trading company representative who's obsessed with being top dog on the island of Nunaloha, no matter what.

Based on short works by Henry James, this series includes "Emma," adapted from the short story "Lord Beauprey"; "Bessie," derived from An International Episode; "Kate," based on "The Bench of Desolation"; "Daisy," from Daisy Miller; "Leonie," adapted from "Nona Vincent"; and "Elizabeth," based on "The Great Condition." Virtually short plays, these six episodes can be viewed individually as well as in series form. While Series 1 (LJ 3/15/09) introduces twists on James favorites, this group presents more serious interpretations. Beautifully staged, produced, and photographed and starring well-known actors such as Derek Jacobi, Christopher Cazenove, and Eileen Atkins, these films are jewels to be admired and enjoyed. Galaxy Press is devoted to the shorter works of L. Ron Hubbard, who was a prolific writer of pulp fiction before he founded Scientology. This collection from 1935 features three short potboilers set in the Yukon, White Russia, and the Hawaii-like Nunaloha, respectively. The cast and sound effects are wonderfully effective in bringing forth the characters and ambiance of each of the stories. Masts creak, huskies bark, guns bang. In addition, the villains are evil, the heroes good, but more complex than the listener might expect. The actors growl and rant and shriek with terror, and cry in pain and bitterness. These are skilled audio manifestations of MYSTERY ADVENTURERS, the magazine from which they spring. There are many more such short Hubbard classics to look forward to.
