Overview

Shirley Temple tap dancing at the Kiwanis Club, Stevie Nicks glaring at Lindsey Buckingham during a live version of “Silver Springs,” Frank Ocean lyrics staking new territory on the page: this is a taste of the cultural landscape sampled in Your New Feeling is the Artifact of a Bygone Era. Chad Bennett casually combines icons of the way we live now—GIFs, smartphones, YouTube—with a classical lover’s lament. The result is certainly a deeply personal account of loss, but more critically, a dismantling of an American history of queerness. “This is our sorrow. Once it seemed theirs, but now it’s ours. They still inhabit it, yet we say it’s ours.” All at once cerebral, physical, personal, and communal, Your New Feeling Is the Artifact of a Bygone Era constructs a future worth celebrating.

HOW THAT BIRD SINGS
[Ten discrete lines: four repeated]

How do you doubt your bird was untrue? Think

“Few sadder histories have been than his.”

Wake late: take the boulevard soaked in sleep

Then delete his browsing history. Claim

That’s just how that bird sings, just how that bird

Has his way with me where his throat begins.

Wake late: take the boulevard soaked in sleep

Where the wide turn of hair thins at his thigh

Or perk your ears at the erased tape’s hiss.

Make an inkling an ambience: decide

“Few sadder histories have been than his.”

How do you doubt your bird was untrue? Think

Where the wide turn of hair thins at his thigh

How the trivial fucks with the divine

LIVES OF INFAMOUS MEN
History misses pansies
—Gertrude Stein

Who is a history. He is a surface the eye skims. He is not the light’s
scrim. He is who is. He comes in threes.

Who is a history. He misses the taste of metal. He misses the sheen
of gasoline. He misses a gaped mouth and misses a gasp missing
still. He unfastens history’s clasp. He will not scream.

Who is a history. He will not scram. He who finds pleasure in the
ledger, who anoints a fidget king, who escapes a scrape at history’s
edge: he.

Who is a history. Who imagines he is a history. Who is and who
in imagining is. Who in a pinch. Who from scratch. Whose violet
thought, freaked with jet, set adrift on history’s inch.

FEMMES
I was with a girl, but I felt like I was with a boy
—Violent Femmes

I was with a girl but felt like I was with a boy.
I was with a grievance but felt like I was with a blessing.
I was with a going but felt like I was with a beckoning.
I was with a grisaille but felt like I was with a blur.
I was with a grave but felt like I was with a birth.
I was with a god but felt like I was with a beast.
I was with a Genet but felt like I was with a Bataille.
I was with a grotesque but felt like I was with a beauty.
I was with a ghost but felt like I was with a body.
