About the Author

I enjoy writing about how the body works. My aim is to make the science behind health and illness accessible to the general reader. I like to shed light, bust myths and raise questions. My first book Your Intelligent Immune System, aims to explain how the immune system works in sickness and health and why most “immune boosting” claims do not work. When I’m taking a break from science I enjoy writing for children. I have enjoyed re-telling some “fairy tales” that do not conform to the predictable pattern of “prince rescues princess and they live happily ever after”. My first publication in this area was a re-telling of The Snow Queen. The main character in The Snow Queen is Gerda, a brave and adventurous girl. I loved this story when I was a child. I think it would be reasonable to think that it helped to inspire CS Lewis when he wrote The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and Phillip Pullman when he wrote The Northern Lights. In all three stories a brave girl ventures into a snowy world and talks to animals.I have also published The Lady of Llyn y Fan, which contains two traditionalWelsh tales. The first story, The Lady of Llyn y Fan, is about a mysterious woman who emerges from a Welsh lake and marries a local boy. Sadly he does not treat her well – a big mistake with any wife, let alone a magical one. The second story is Bloddeuwedd, about a wife created by magicians, from just a few common flowers. It is told from her point of view – she comes into the world fully grown and speaking perfect Welsh but innocent of the ways of the world. When writing these stories I imagine myself reading them aloud to my grandchildren.I have B.Sc and M.Phil. degrees from the University of Wales and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Southampton. I have worked as a science teacher in secondary schools and as a staff trainer in both the National Health Service and the water industry. I have also been an antenatal teacher, a mother, a school governor and teacher of yoga.
