Overview

Young’s Scouts routed superior enemy forces time and again early in the Philippine-American War (1899-1902). The unit was originally comprised of just 25 men, and they served together for less than a month, but their exploits captured the imagination and admiration of soldier and civilian alike. Twelve received the Medal of Honor for exceptional valor on the battlefield. Six others received a Certificate of Merit for extraordinary gallantry in the presence of the enemy. No other unit garnered such honors.

About the Author

John Durand is highly regarded for his careful research and narrative skills. He is the author of "The Boys: 1st North Dakota Volunteers in the Philippines," an acclaimed history of that regiment's experience in the Philippine-American War. He has also authored two well-received historical novels. "The Taos Massacres" deals with the uprising of Mexicans and Indians in the aftermath of the U.S. annexation of New Mexico in the Mexico-American War. "The Odyssey of Mary B" is a compelling saga of the founding of Australia and the fate of a remarkable, young convict woman, history's "girl from Botany Bay." Durand has also written a memoir titled "Behind Enemy Lines," which describes the effect his childhood polio had on his early (and later) life. His memoir is praised for its depiction of small-town America in the 1940s. Recently, Durand edited and published a posthumous memoir by an early Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines, "A Wedding in Samar."
