In which Adults conspire to save families from embarrassment, and children resist complying with parental decisions. A captivating story about two families; one, the patriarchy of a Detroit auto industry executive, and the other, that of a self-made Irish immigrant, become involved in making watershed decisions regarding their reputations and the futures of their children.

The choices of two sisters from one family and a brother from the other lead to anxieties and stresses that keep the reader guessing about the outcomes. The story unfolds like a kaleidoscopic image of irreversible patterns. Historical characters, Church figures, and 20th century events permeate the storyline. The novel is presented in two parts.
