Description: This book offers a problem-oriented, case-based discussion of critical anesthetic problems in a question-and-answer format. This updated edition includes improved graphics and formatting for readability, as well as a complimentary ebook version that can be accessed online or downloaded to a tablet using the Inkling app. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The purpose is to update a popular book to reflect the current clinical practice of anesthesiology given modern advances in surgery. With its organization by organ system and the case-based, question-and-answer format, the book is well suited for trainees and for continuing education for practicing anesthesiologists. Presenting both a print and ebook version (with highlighting, bookmarking, note-taking, and search features) adds important value.
Audience: It is intended for anesthesiology residents and practicing anesthesiologists, and it can be used as a review for continuing education. The book meets the needs of its intended audience, and the authors are experienced clinician-educators.
Features: The book includes separate sections on pediatrics, pain management, and miscellaneous topics. Topics are discussed in depth using a question-and-answer format that is particularly well suited for continuing education for practitioners, as well as for review and preparation for the applied board certification exam for residents. The cardiac system is particularly well covered.
Assessment: This is a well-written review of important topics in anesthesiology. The format enables readers to organize their thoughts and approach to each case. Topics are explored in sufficient depth, with references following each section. My old edition is one of my favorite books, and this is a welcome update. The new ebook with access online or from a mobile device makes it convenient to use.
