There was a bonfire the night Jeremy arrived in the valley, and he followed the bright orange light and the sound of music to the party. There were a few girls, but most of the people gathered around the fire pit were cowboys, taking a night-off to unwind with their buddies and a few 30 racks. Jeremy stepped out of the shadows into the circle of light with a friendly smile, introducing himself to the nearest person--a cowboy by the name of Grady. Within minutes, Jeremy was well acquainted with the group, warming himself by the fire and enjoying a cold beer. It seemed surreal--almost completely unreal but that was life in Wyoming.
"How long have you been in these parts?" Grady asked, moving to stand at his elbow.
"Arrived in Star Valley yesterday. I'm staying with some friends."
"Who?"
Jeremy named his buddy from high school--an ex-lover who never understood that Jeremy was actually in love with him. It was funny that he ran to that man for solace now, but everything was so fucked up that Jeremy thought he might be the only friend he had left in this world.
