Description: This exceptional seventh edition presents a comprehensive, to-the-point overview of current knowledge in treatment of epilepsy. It is an excellent book that covers most of what any epileptologist would want to know about epilepsy and its management.
Purpose: Knowledge in epilepsy is changing rapidly thanks to research involving molecular genetics, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and patient-centered outcome measures. The purpose of this book is to provide up-to-date, thorough knowledge more than a compendium about treatment of epilepsy offers.
Audience: Epilepsy fellows, neurology residents, practicing neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroscientists interested in epilepsy should own a copy of this classic textbook. I have seen previous editions on the shelves of almost all the adult and pediatric epileptologists I know.
Features: The book consists of six sections dealing with epileptogenesis, electroencephalography, seizures and syndromes, antiseizure medications, epilepsy surgery, and psychosocial issues. These sections are further subdivided into 98 wonderfully manageable (often not more than a few pages), easy-to-read chapters, which cover all aspects of epilepsy diagnosis and treatment approaches. The chapters are comprised of updated information on newer 2017 ILAE seizure terminology and classification as well as the latest ongoing research in the field. The chapters on treatment approaches are impressive because they include detailed pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medications any clinician may use during their career. Each section has a reader-friendly layout, updated list of references, and illustrated, clear-cut color figures, tables, and pictures.
Assessment: This textbook is outstanding and up to date. Of course, one would expect nothing less of a book authored by Dr. Elaine Wyllie. Compared to Epilepsy: A Comprehensive Textbook - 3 Volume Set, 2nd edition, Engel et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2008), another classic reference textbook for epilepsy, this textbook is more current and provides all the necessary information that can be easily read over the span of a few months. I highly recommend all practicing epileptologists and trainees own a personal copy. At the very minimum, this textbook should find its way to the shelf of every medical library's neurology section.
